Udaipur My Favorite Travel Destination in India [7 Reasons]

The City of Lakes Udaipur

I had a treasured dream to visit Udaipur since I came to know a lot about this beautiful city from one of my friends. This September I was there, and truly fall in love with this city. The interesting thing is that Udaipur, my favorite travel destination in Rajasthan, India is much more fascinating than my imagination. I tried to depict why and how this romantic city can be your must-visit destination too. So, here is the top 7 reasons to explore Udaipur during your next trip to Rajasthan.

Udaipur is an amazing combination of royalty and nature. A popular tourist spot Udaipur is also called the Venice of the East. In 1559 A.D. Maharana Udai Singh II of the Mewar region built Udaipur. Then this city became the capital of that kingdom. For till long, Udaipur has been ruled by the British in India. And then after the Indian Liberation War in 1947 to, until now, Udaipur is under the state of Rajasthan.

The dynasties from Mewar Maharana are still there and staying in one part of the City Palace. Their palaces are now becoming part of museums and luxurious heritage hotels. Tourists are always most welcome to explore the rich history and culture of Udaipur.

Udaipur is most well known as the City of Lakes and interestingly all are man-made. Tourism plays a big role in the growth of the economy in Udaipur. Besides, this city is blessed with its unique culture which fulls of many seasonal festivals and fairs. Artistic handicrafts and handlooms from the locals here given an exceptional identity within the country and worldwide. Various marble, silver, and metal artworks, paintings, and morals are also significant.

I traveled to Udaipur by road (car) from Jaipur. From the roadside, I was totally amazed by the scenic beauty of the Aravalli Hill ranges. I also found much-cultivated Maize and Wheatfields and later came to know Udaipur is rich in agriculture throughout the country from those crops.

Top 7 Reasons To Explore Udaipur

Royal History and Beauty

It was a royal feeling when I took an entry from the Great Gate to explore the City Palace and Museum. The visit to those places will give you the entire knowledge about the inside history of Udaipur and the lifestyle of the Mewar family during that time. City Palace is a masterpiece of beauty and the main tourist attraction in Udaipur. In one sense, you can explore the city’s beauty in the City Palace Complex. There are many, yes I’m repeating there is much to explore the Complex.

Picturesque Nature

Many beautiful lakes with views of the Aravalli Hill increases the total beauty of Udaipur. Lake Pichola is the most beautiful and the oldest one and here are four islands too, which created a fascinating beauty to the entire lake atmosphere. Boating on Lake Pichola can be your life experience to feel nature at your best. What I loved is that I found many hotels on the banks of Lake Pichola. And the beauty of Lake Palace on Lake Island was the most picturesque one to remember and capture. The Popular Fateh Sagar Lake is another attractive creation here. And to enjoy the wildlife and nature you must go for the visit to Sajjan Garh Biological Park.

City of Hotels

How tourism plays a significant role in Udaipur? The answer is Hotels and Resorts. Yes, you can find many hotels to stay within budget to luxury. Here are some world-class and famous luxurious hotels, and they are The Oberoi Udaivilas, Lake Palace, and Shiv Niwas Palace. Mostly, all hotels in Udaipur will give you exceptional royal and authentic feelings with the beauty of nature. My three nights stay at Hotel Mahendra Prakash made me say, “If I could stay more longtime here!” In one word, I was just lost in myself and nature here. And so why most tourists around the world love staying in Udaipur.

Peaceful and Romantic

I’m a quiet type of person. I enjoyed trolling alone in Udaipur. There was no crowd and less traffic. I found the locals helpful and friendly. English is vastly used almost by everyone in Udaipur so no problem to adjust yourself around with all. Fewer people and so less crime record you’ll find here. I found it as a peaceful destination. In 2009, the Travel + Leisure magazine was right to select Udaipur as the Best City in the world.

During the British rule in India Col. James Tod was perfectly described Udaipur as the most Romantic Destination in India. How? Just imagine, a luxurious dinner at Lake Palace, the world’s most romantic hotel, or a lovely visit to the Monsoon Palace with your beloved. How romantic can be? Yes, the beauty of nature with the royal feelings can give you the ultimate pleasure of love and soulful happiness. And so Udaipur now became a popular Wedding Destination in the world. A memorable walk at the Jag Mandir Garden or solely lost yourself at Saheliyon Ki Badi and Nehru Park all can be listed as the romantic tourist attractions in Udaipur.

Art and Craft

The best way to know any tourist destination is to go deeper into their culture. Udaipur is historically enriched with beautiful art, paintings, and various metal artworks. To know more about the local culture you shouldn’t miss visiting the Folk Art Museum (Bhartiya Lok Kala Mandir) here. To take the real taste of the regional handicrafts Shilpgram Complex is the must-visit destination.

I loved the artistic architect of Jagdish Temple near the City Palace area. Some famous Festivals and Fairs in Udaipur are Shilpgram Festival, Gangaur Festival, and Hariyali Amavasya Fair.

Shopping Fun

I enjoyed colorful and fancy shopping on Palace Road in Udaipur. You’ll find many women outfits from Indian to western here. The best part is in every shop nearby you will see Tailoring Facility, and so you can stitch your clothing instantly to check for fitting and all. Prices are reasonable here comparatively from Agra and Jaipur. So, girls, will you like to try? 😉 There are many authentic staff for home decoration too. And I was astonished while seeing and knowing for the first time about Eco-Friendly Saree in different heritage shops at the City Palace Complex. And interestingly those sarees can be recycled and reused. Huh!

Popular Shooting Spot

How many of you know that Udaipur is also a popular Shooting Destination worldwide? From Hollywood to Bollywood, many films, drama series, and documentaries shot here. The shooting of the James Bond movie Octopussy (1983) gave huge popularity to Udaipur in the world. As a movie lover, I was too excited while visiting the same place where many popular movies filmed before 🙂 Some of my favorite movies shot in Udaipur are The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (2012), Darjeeling Limited (2007), Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani (2013), and Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela (2013).
