You can take a road trip here by bus or taxi. A walking tour or trekking is also the best way to see the extreme landscape of the fascinating hill town of Haputale. How To Reach Haputale?
There are two ways to reach Haputale, either by rail or by road. From Colombo to Badulla Road is the best option if you’re traveling by road. You’ll find many public buses. But the train journey is the enjoyable one from Colombo to Badulla. The rush is more from Colombo to Ella, so you’ll experience less crowd till Haputale and after that Ella.
To enjoy the real excitement, book your rail ticket in 2nd or 3rd class. Here you’ll be able to photograph a lot from the open window and door. For the scenic views, you’ll even enjoy standing in front of the door if you can’t manage a seat.
I traveled by Expo Rail from Nanu Oya Railway Station to Haputale Railway Station. It took one and half an hour to reach the station. The journey was awesome, on the way enjoyed the superb view of the mountains, lush tea plantations. The 1st class train service by Expo Rail was too good, served snacks and I loved to take the taste of one cup of fresh Ceylon Tea for the first time in Sri Lanka. But sadly Expo Rail is no more operational since September 2017. I wish they start their standard railway service soon again.
When To Visit Haputale?
In between January to May is the best time to explore the spectacular beauty of Haputale. During this time the average temperature in Haputale is neither too cold nor too hot. But overall the climate of Haputale is cooler all over the year compared to other destinations and hill stations in Sri Lanka. To get clear views of mountains better to avoid visiting Haputale during monsoon especially in the month of October.
