I’m now a big fan of the Nikon camera. It’s been more than 2 years and I’m still loving my travel photography with Nikon Coolpix P600. This 60x optical zoom camera is too handy and easy to use for anyone from amateur to pro. Just a perfect photography gear for me to carry no matter where I go. Hence, I’d like to share my photography experience with Nikon Coolpix P600 digital camera. So, what I like and dislike about the Nikon Coolpix camera? Details inside to check my Nikon Coolpix P600 camera review.
What I like most about Nikon Coolpix P600 camera is the 60x optical zoom NIKKOR lens. I don’t need to worry about to change lens, as it is the fixed one. This is the main reason I bought Nikon Coolpix P600 in 2015 and enjoyed capturing travel photos in 7 different countries. Still, I’m having a cool experience apart from some issues with this digital camera.
In the meantime, Nikon has released a couple of newer models of this same item and definitely worth buying. The Nikon Coolpix B700 has more megapixels (20.2MP) with a 60x optical zoom NIKKOR Super ED lens. And it is great to share, I made a switch to a Nikon Coolpix P900. This Nikon super-zoom camera featuring an 83x optical zoom NIKKOR lens with a professional video recording function. You can read the details from the Nikon Coolpix P900 camera review.

Travel Photography with Nikon Coolpix P600
Nikon Coolpix P600 Camera Review
I’m happy that I didn’t need to expend much to get high-quality images from Nikon Coolpix P600. I bought this at a reasonable price and became one of my favorite best cameras of all time. I was right to trust Nikon and Nikon Coolpix P600 as a beginner.
Light and Compact
The weight of the Nikon Coolpix P600 is too light compared to other super-zoom cameras. It can be easily carried in a backpack or any hand luggage. And so I feel comfortable carrying everywhere. Here you don’t have to carry so many lenses. You’ll just love to play with the fixed lens of NIKKOR. The high performance of the Nikon Coolpix P600 compact digital camera is simply excellent.
Kalapathar Beach in Havelock Island, India (1/1000, f/3.3, ISO 100)
Dambatenne Tea Factory in Haputale, Sri Lanka (1/100, f/5.2, ISO 500)
Ease of Use
I already mentioned Nikon Coolpix P600 is a very handy device and easy to use for all. The design and every function of this camera are user-friendly. All buttons here are nicely placed to navigate easily and quickly. Any settings can be customized from the Menu button.
For video recording, a separate button is there. For quick access to any saved images, you can directly press the image button and so on.
I recommend Photographer’s Guide to the Nikon Coolpix P600 by Alexander S. White. Definitely worth reading to know all about Nikon Coolpix P600.
Image Quality
I will say the image quality of the Nikon Coolpix P600 digital camera is not less than any DSLR in terms of just 16 megapixels with a small CMOS sensor. It provides an excellent super-zoom shot and also a close-up or macro shot. But I really dislike the function of slow autofocus of this camera. It takes more time to focus especially when trying to increase the level of zooming or fully zoomed.
Jomolhari Mountain in Paro, Bhutan (1/640, f/5.6, ISO 100)
Popular Tourist Destination Thamel in Nepal (1/8, f/3.3, ISO 500)
The maximum shutter speed of Nikon Coolpix P600 is 15 seconds and so best for night photography. Moreover, I enjoy landscape photography with my Nikon camera. And normally I don’t go for any editing with Photoshop and any other image editing apps. I love using the raw one which just sharp and perfect in all ways.
Sari River in Sylhet, Bangladesh (1/200, f/5.5, ISO 100)
LCD Screen and Viewfinder
The smart 3 inches LCD screen of Nikon Coolpix P600 will definitely provide you a professional shooting experience. It has an electronic eye-level viewfinder which can be easily tilted to provide a vari-angle display. It will give you different perspectives to take any perfect shot from up to bottom.
This particular feature works great for me as a solo traveler to take selfies and recording any video on the way.
Peradeniya Royal Botanic Gardens in Kandy, Sri Lanka (1/640, f/3.3, ISO 100)
Fatehpur Sikri in Uttar Pradesh, India (1/400, f/3.5, ISO 100)
Nikon Coolpix P600 Shooting Modes
There are many auto shooting modes under Nikon Coolpix P600 which can be easily used while shooting. If you don’t want to customize any settings manually then the best option to go for many modes according to your photo subject.
Pura Ulun Danu Beratan in Bali, Indonesia (1/1000, f/3.3, ISO 100)
I found Scene Auto Selector Mode is the helpful one, and even Night Landscape or Landscape Mode is the best one to use to get a detailed landscape capture. User Settings Mode is to customize the total settings before photographing.
Kushma Gyadi Suspension Bridge in Nepal (ƒ/5.0, 1/40, ISO 400)
You can even try a bit creative by using any filters or effects and can change the color or just keep any single color.

Video Recording
Nikon Coolpix P600 gives you the general video recording facility in full HD 1080 pixels with the stereo audio system. You can monitor all-time through LCD screen whatever you’re recording. The video file format is MP4.
Overall this device is ok for recording despite some drawbacks. Sometimes it suddenly stopped recording at the time of zooming. And also this camera creates more noises when need to move to record.
Battery Life
The longevity of the Nikon Coolpix P600 battery is excellent. This is another reason I like using a Nikon digital camera. Still, I didn’t buy any new battery. Neither I need to recharge the whole night nor day to fully charged.
Paro Airport Birds Eye View in Bhutan (1/1000, f/3.3, ISO 100)
In a one-time charge, you can capture 330 photos and this is more than enough for one day. And for charging, I do use HQRP AC Adapter for Nikon EH-67A COOLPIX P600.

Nikon Coolpix P600 Camera Apps
Some free Nikon apps you can directly download from the Nikon Website. And mostly all apps are accessible from Android to iPhone users.
I found the Wireless Mobile Utility app is a useful one that helps to access photos from the camera to my iPhone. It supports Nikon’s built-in Wi-Fi feature.
If you like to use Bluetooth then better to go for the SnapBridge app, it quickly moves your all camera photos to smartphones and easy to share as well.
Nikon Coolpix P600 Camera Tips
- If you don’t use your camera for long days then take out the battery from the camera to help it not to be easily drained.
- It is always recommended not to turn on the feature of Wi-Fi on the camera to save the life of a battery.
- Night Landscape Scene Mode works simply great to get a perfect night landscape shot.
Sum Up
Nikon Coolpix P600 is a perfect travel photography gear for light travelers. At a reasonable price, this camera gives you more than your expectations. And from this Nikon Coolpix P600 camera review, you found that Nikon has already fixed issues in their newly released Nikon Coolpix P900 and other Nikon Coolpix cameras.
So, as a Nikon lover, you can anytime switch to another Nikon device. You’re right to think as I don’t like to carry so many lenses, so in that aspect, Nikon Coolpix P600 is a perfect travel photography gear for me as well.

Thank you for this post. I have the Nikon Coolpix P600 and truly have not used it as intended. I need to learn the features more. Is there a setting you would recommend to take nice family photos (think children with landscaped background)? Also, what setting did you use to take the flower picture with the blurred background?
Hi Tina, thank you for asking! I think you always take photos using Autofocus mode, right? You can get a detail landscape capture if you select Scene Auto Selector or Landscape mode. Just after Autofocus, you can find those modes. You have to roll the top button of your camera in a particular direction. Else change the settings from Menu. And for getting the blurred background select the Closeup (lotus flower icon) option. There are also many filters or effects to edit your photos. Just play a bit more with your camera and then it’ll be very easy for you handle and take a great shot even with Nikon Coolpix camera.
