Part I: Pre-Hajj Preparations (Hajj Essentials)

Part II: Hajj Rituals and Hajj Essentials

Ihram: The Sacred Attire

Both men and women don the Ihram, a simple two-piece white garment that symbolizes purity and unity. Men wear two unsewn white sheets, while women wear loose and modest white clothing.

Tawaaf: Circumambulation of the Ka’bah

The first ritual of Hajj is the Tawaaf, where pilgrims circumambulate the Ka’bah seven times in a counterclockwise direction. Both men and women participate in this ritual, showing devotion and humility.

Sa’i: Walking Between Safa and Marwah

Pilgrims reenact Hajar’s search for water by walking seven times between the hills of Safa and Marwah. Both men and women engage in this ritual, reflecting determination and faith.

After completing Sa’i, both men and women drink plenty of Zamzam water and then shave or trim their hair which completes the ritual of Umrah followed by Hajj al-Tamattu.

First Day: 8 Dhul-Hijjah (The Day of Tarwiyah)

Stay in Mina

All pilgrims prepare and remind themselves of all prohibitions to follow according to the Qur’an and Sunnah. The prohibitions of the state of Ihram start now.

All proceed to Mina after the morning (Fajr) prayer where they have to stay the whole day in the camp and offer prayers in the state of Ihram. The next day all the pilgrims started to leave for Arafat from Mina after Fajr prayer.

Second Day: 9 Dhul-Hijjah (The Day of ‘Arafah)

Arafat: Standing in Devotion

A key pillar of Hajj, the Day of Arafat involves standing in supplication on the plains of Arafat. Both men and women participate in this essential ritual, seeking forgiveness and closeness to Allah.

Mount Arafat is significant during the Hajj, on The Day of ‘Arafah. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: “Hajj is ‘Arafah.” And it is on 9 Dhul-Hijjah. On this day, the honor of time and place come together in moments of faith in which Allah’s mercy and kindness prevail.

Muzdalifah: Collecting Stones and Spend the Night

Pilgrims leave for Muzdalifah without performing the evening (Maghrib) prayer at Arafat. They spend the night in Muzdalifah and perform Maghrib and night (Isha) prayer together. Also, collect pebbles for the symbolic stoning of pillars representing Satan.

Third Day: 10 Dhul-Hijjah (The Day of Sacrifice)

After the Fajr prayer, the Pilgrims move again from Muzdalifah to Mina.

Stoning the Jamrah (The Jamrah of ‘Aqabah)

On this day pilgrims only stone the Jamrah of ‘Aqabah or the big pillar representing the Devil/Satan. It is located at the end of Mina when going towards Makkah.

Animal Sacrifice

After stoning the Jamrah of ‘Aqabah pilgrims are ready to sacrifice (Qurbani) an animal in the name of Allah ﷻ. It is also possible to buy a voucher to sacrifice online.

Remember, the sacrifice is obligatory only for those performing either the Tamattu Hajj or the Qiraan Hajj.

The 10th of Dhul-Hijjah is also the Day of Eid-ul-Adha.

Haircut (Tahallul)

After animal sacrificing pilgrims, both men and women, engage in Tahallul by trimming (usually a fingertip’s length for women) or shaving (for men) a portion of their hair or trim it. This act symbolizes humility and purification.

Tawaaf-ul-Ifaadah

On the same or the following day, both men and women pilgrims perform Tawaaf-ul-Ifaadah. This is one of the most important pillars of Hajj and is also called Tawaaf Al-Hajj or Tawaaf Az-Zi-yaarah.

One should circumambulate the Ka’bah seven times. This signifies the completion of the main Hajj rituals. After this ritual pilgrims are allowed to leave the state of Ihram.

The time for Tawaaf-ul-Ifaadah begins at midnight on the day of Eid and ends at the end of the month of Dhul-Hijjah.

Following Tawaaf-ul-Ifadah, spend the night in Mina, engaging in acts of worship, remembrance, and supplication. Reflect on the significance of the pilgrimage and seek Allah’s mercy and forgiveness.

The Days of Tashreeq

The days of Tashreeq are three days after Eid-ul-Adha. The 11th, 12th, and 13th of Dhul-Hijjah, are days of Eid and joy following the completion of the Hajj. May Allah ﷻ accept everyone’s Hajj and grant us a Hajj Mabrur.

Fourth Day: 11 Dhul-Hijjah (Stoning the Jamaraat)

Pilgrims stone at each of the three pillars or the three Jamaraat in Mina. They must stone each one of them with seven pebbles. This is commonly known as the Stoning of the Jamaraat – The small Jamrah, the middle Jamrah, and the Jamrah of ‘Aqabah. This ritual starts each day at noon and ends at sunset.

Fiffh Day: 12 Dhul-Hijjah (Stoning the Jamaraat)

The same process of the Stoning of the Jamaraat continued on 12 Dhul-Hijjah. After completion of the stoning pilgrims may leave Mina for Makkah before sunset on the same day.

Last Day: 13 Dhul-Hijjah

Those unable to leave before sunset on 12 Dhul-Hijjah, must perform the stoning ritual again on 13 Dhul-Hijjah before returning to Makkah.

Part III: After Hajj

Tawaaf-ul-Wada (Farewell Circumambulation)

Before leaving Makkah, perform Tawaaf-ul-Wada, or the Farewell Tawaaf. This is a final act of circumambulation around the Ka’bah to bid farewell to the sacred city.

Reflect and Express Gratitude

After completing the Hajj rituals, take time to reflect on the journey, the spiritual insights gained, and the blessings received. Express gratitude to Allah for the opportunity to perform Hajj.

Sadaqah and Acts of Charity
